When I was a child, I remember visiting doctor very rarely. Gone are the days, where the visit to a doctor is made only after the home remedy fails. I wonder if today people are even aware of the methods. One of the useful such remedy is the Omam Kashayam or Ajwain Drink. Omam is called as Ajwain in Hindi and Carom in English. .Oma kashayam is something that is prepared at my home every now and then. Reason? Well, it can give instant relief to stomach problems related to acidity, indigestion etc. Whenever someone complains of stomach ailment, at home we first try curing it with this kashayam, which is pretty simple and easy to make. Check out the recipe below.

Sheikdom Invites!
It is now exactly a year since we made this trip and finally I get to put down the experiences with Dubai. The trip was made in November 2010 along with the trip to Egypt. The journey to Egypt has already been covered in the following parts.
We spent 2 days in Dubai on a transit visa. The plan was to visit as much places as possible and the desert safari was a must have on the list. We were able to cover most of the places thanks to the support from my wife’s uncle and aunt.

Coconut Ladoo
A simple recipe for making coconut ladoos from our guest writer, Sandhya from Coimbatore.
A delight for people who love coconut! This is a simple dessert that can be prepared easily at home and with ingredients that are easily available. Though the recipe is simple, one can easily improvise it and include other items as per the taste and liking. A note of caution though – The dessert is made primarily from coconut and hence its life span is very limited. Thus one needs to ensure that you make the right quantities to avoid wastage.

Banana Stem curry
It has been a long time since I prepared something with Banana stem. Last week when I went for shopping I made sure that I purchase banana stem. Banana stem is highly rich in fibres and a healthy food to cook. The first thought that comes with banana stem is to make a steamed stem salad. However at the last minute I decided to make a curry with the stem that would also go well with rice. The end result was something that really took me by surprise. The combination was fantastic and something to die for. Now to the recipe.

PuliInji/Inji Puli(Ginger in Tamarind)
It is that time of the year when the taste buds of Malayalees are out in full strength. Onam is a festival of celebrations and one of the main part of this celebration is the food. The food is grand and there are various elements of such a feast. Puli Inji or Inji puli, however you call it is an important item in this feast. It adds the sour-sweet taste to the dish and is also considered a very good digestion aiding agent. Though very simple to make, the taste varies greatly between two different persons.
Check out my recipe below for our version of puli inji!

Mangalore buns
“Have you tasted Mangalore buns ?” My ex-colleague who is also a close friend asked me when we were at the food court last year. I did not basically understand what she was referring to as we regularly purchased bun for either burger or for tea. This was the first time I had heard about Mangalore Buns. I decided to order this and give it a try more out of curiosity. Soon we were served with a plate that had something like the normal poori. I could not resist the temptation to taste it. I took a piece of it to taste. “How is it ?” she asked me. It definitely tasted good. The buns were on the sweeter side mildly and I could taste some banana flavour. It definitely made a good snack item. But then, why the name Buns? Well, even she did not have an answer. “Can it be prepared at home?” I asked her. I immediately got the recipe from her and a year later I finally tried it at home. It came out really well. If you are some one who do not like the banana flavour, then I doubt if you would like this item. For all others, this is one snack that you should definitely try!
Semiya (Vermicelli) Payasam
It was my husband’s birthday couple of months back. Normally on star birthdays, we prepare payasam(kheer) at home and it is usually either pal ada pradhaman or sarkara payasam. This time I decided to deviate from the usual trend. It had been ages since I last prepared semiya payasam. Semiya payasam is a tricky one but if done well it is really delicious. I had all the necessary ingredients at home, and therefore it was time for me to get into action and treat my husband to the delicious semiya payasam.
